Lap Times: Prototypes vs. CRT vs. Moto2 at Phillip Island

For qualifying at Phillip Island, it would be safe to say that the weather conditions were tricky. Cold, cloudy, windy, with at times drops of rain, both MotoGP and Moto2 had to overcome the variable climate at the coastal Australian track. With three turns clocking well over 200 km/h (~125 mph), Phillip Island is a fast circuit, but not necessarily a circuit dominated by bikes with a lot of horsepower. Instead, rhythm is the name ...

2012 Phillip Island MotoGP FP2 Result: Stoner Dominates Under Southern Sun

Casey Stoner has dominated the first day of practice at Phillip Island. After leading FP1 by nine tenths of a second, the Repsol Honda man dished up more of the same in the afternoon, ending the session just under nine tenths ahead of his teammate Dani Pedrosa. Stoner's pace was unrelenting, regularly lapping in the 1'30s, just dipping into the 1'29s towards the end of the session, already under the race lap record set by Nicky Hayden back in 2008.

Dani Pedrosa found a little more pace in the afternoon, taking 2nd behind his teammate, while Jorge Lorenzo ended the session in 3rd, just over a second slower than Stoner. Lorenzo heads up the Yamaha armada, with Cal Crutchlow faster than his Monster Tech 3 teammate Andrea Dovizioso, the Englishman taking 4th and the Italian 5th. Alvaro Bautista led the satellite Hondas, taking 6th ahead of Stefan Bradl, while Valentino Rossi was the fastest of the Ducatis, his 8th place time over two seconds slower than Stoner.

Stoner: Potential greater than fourth

Casey Stoner believes he has the underlying pace to achieve more at Sepang than the second-row grid slot he labelled ‘disappointing’. Having struggled with his injuries on his comeback last weekend at Motegi, the Australian was in good form early on in Malaysia, ending Friday’s sole dry session second fastest.

MotoGP: Ben Spies to Miss Phillip Island Round

As if crashing out of the Malaysian GP wasn’t bizarro enough, Ben Spies has announced today that he will be missing the Australian GP, as it has become evident that he injured his shoulder in his wet-weather tumble at Sepang. Although found to have no injuries by the Clinica Mobile staff at the circuit, after undergoing tests in Kuala Lumpur post-race, Spies found that he had sustained an AC shoulder separation, a cracked rib in the upper-chest ...

Phillip Island To Name Turn 3 After Casey Stoner

The Phillip Island circuit is to name Turn 3 after Casey Stoner. A ceremony is to be held on Thursday at 11:45am local time to name the corner in honor of the 2007 and 2011 World Champion. Stoner joins Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner, Australia's other two premier class World Champions, in have a part of the iconic Australian circuit named after him. Doohan has the first corner named after him, and the front straight running past the pits and into Doohan corner is named after Gardner.

It is fitting that Stoner should have Turn 3 named after him. The Australian has consistently named that corner as one of his favorite corners on the MotoGP calendar. It has everything which Stoner believes are the ingredients of an exciting turn: it is very fast, long, and the more courage you use in attacking the corner, the faster you go through there. It is a corner where Stoner slides the rear to help turn the bike, a skill at which he excels.
